Solen students created dream catchers and learned about flight while making catchers at Sitting Bull's Sunday Academy STEM program

Tomorrow, Monday 12th, Mrs. Cutting will be at the Solen High School in the afternoon to allow all girls the opportunity to look through the school's selection of dresses for Winter Formal. There is a $5 fee to borrow a dress, this is due to the school adding more than 30 dresses to the selection as well as the prospect of adding to the selection for Prom this Spring. Any students interested in borrowing a dress for the dance, please bring $5 to school tomorrow.

Solen Sioux Athletic Schedule (Week of 1-12)

Solen/Cannon Ball Public School Families,
I hope this finds you well as we head into the second half of the school year. It’s hard to believe the year is half over. I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you how we are doing as a school. This includes things that are going great, things that we need to develop, and opportunities to work together with our families.
Our schools have wonderful things and great improvements happening. At the high school, we are proud of the highest graduation rate Solen High School has had in years. The graduation rate for the 2024-25 school year was 88.9% (North Dakota graduation rate was 84.2%). Additionally, our graduating seniors' Choice Ready rate was 60%, which is up from 17% the year before. In reading achievement at the high school, 78% of our students scored in the approaching proficiency range on the state test. We are making great strides in reading proficiency by moving a significant amount of our students out of the novice range of assessment into the approaching proficiency range. Our high school administration and staff are working tirelessly to provide interventions in reading and math as well as opportunities for personal growth and career development opportunities for our high school students. For example, last semester four Solen High School students were able to take a welding class at Standing Rock High School as part of the Heart River CTE Center.
In the elementary school, we are seeing significant improvements in behaviors across the student population. During the 2022-23 school year, there were over 60 out of school suspensions in the elementary school. In 2024-25, there were five and this year so far there have been six out of school suspensions. This is the result of administration and staff working together as the students’ well-being the focal point of behavior interventions and our social –emotional programing in our elementary school. Our elementary staff has been diligently devoted to re-working our reading curriculum to meet the needs of our students. We are seeing growth in each grade level. Our elementary had 8% of their students score proficient on the state assessment in reading and another 33% are approaching proficiency. This also means we are moving students out of the novice (lowest) performance range of achievement.
We have created an online data profile that is easy to access and follow. This can be found on our school website (solen.k12.nd.us) on the home page under School Improvement. When you go to this page, you will see this is work in progress, and data will be updated in the days and weeks to come. There is valuable data in there now and will continue to be developed. Data can also be seen at the state level on the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction website on the NDDPI Insights (insights.nd.gov). This site will allow you to see data for our district and schools in our district as well as data for the entire state of North Dakota. Please check into these sites periodically to see how we are doing.
We are continuiung our work school on our athletic and club programs. We have been working diligently over the last year and half to develop our extra-curricular programs. This year we have been able to offer cross–country, volleyball, and basketball. We will be offering track and field this spring. We are also hoping to add fastpitch softball and golf at some point if the numbers support that. School sports have so many physical and mental health benefits. These opportunities provide an opportunity for the community to bond together for the betterment of our kids as well as foster a sense of belonging for the students. We need parents to support the process of academic eligibility and meeting requirements such as ensuring their students obtain their sports physicals. The school has brought in professionals to conduct those physicals on site as well as taking students to physical appointments. Despite this effort, we still have students lacking physicals required in order to even attend practice. These issues make it difficult to field a team with a consistent and inadequate number of teammates. We are amid the basketball season and are still having challenges with having enough eligible players due to sports physicals. we are here to assist parents and guardians, but we need your cooperation with this. Involvement at the academic level is even more important. Some ways parents can assist us and your child is by reading to your child, communicating with your child’s teacher, checking grades in power school and talking to your child about their school day. One of the most important indicators of student success is the involvement of the family in their child’s education. I want to encourage you all to follow our website and social media pages and communicate with our teachers. It will make a difference!
Thank you for allowing us to educate your children.

"Showcasing months of hard work, innovation, and creativity—our Senior students present their Capstone projects with pride!"
Creating a Capstone project is more than just completing an academic requirement—it is a journey of inquiry, creativity, and self-expression. Throughout this process, students explore meaningful topics, conduct research, and design solutions that reflect not only their skills but also their identities. By integrating artistic elements and cultural influences, students bring depth and authenticity to their work. Art becomes a tool for communication, and culture becomes a lens through which ideas gain context and purpose.
Together, these components transform each Capstone project into a powerful showcase of knowledge, creativity, heritage, and personal voice.

We hope you all have a wonderful break. School resumes Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

Teacher shout out alert!
Congratulations to Sarah Morin for being the Rural School Collaboratives Place Based Grant winner from North Dakota!! As a hub of the Rural School Collaborative, NDSOS (North Dakota Small Organized Schools) member schools' teachers may apply for the Place Based Grant. An award of $2500 to support the project. Congratulations Sarah!!
North Dakota had six applicants and our very own Mrs. Morin was selected for North Dakota. Way to go Sarah!!
Below is a description of her that was published:
"Sarah Morin is a 6th-grade teacher at Solen Public School District, where she has taught for 14 years. She integrates culture, creativity, and hands-on learning into her classroom and has experience leading STEM and arts-based projects through Sunday Academy and school initiatives. Outside of teaching, she enjoys crafting and designing student-centered activities. Sarah is excited to launch a place-based Craft Club that celebrates community, culture, and creativity."
By creating Craft Club, Sarah seeks to connect students with the culture, history, and natural resources of south-central North Dakota through hands-on making. The club will serve as both an artistic outlet and an educational opportunity by weaving together traditional crafts, modern creative expression, and place-based learning. Students will explore crafts rooted in the region– such as beadwork, textile design, woodworking, and recycled-material art– while learning about the local stories, values, and environments that inspire these practices. That learning will be built upon community partnerships with local artisans, elders, and artists. Students will culminate the project by creating murals, decorative items, and community displays that will strengthen their sense of belonging, creativity, and pride of place.
